CHAPTER NINETEEN

PROBLEM: I CAN’T find my leather jacket.

I was wearing it this morning when we went to visit Raul, and I remember taking it off when I went back to my rooms after lunch, which means it should be here. I look in all the usual places I keep it – the wardrobe, the bathroom, the floor – then turn the place upside down looking again, but there’s no mistake.

And it gets worse: I can scent him on the air. Killian Drake has been in my rooms, and he’s stolen the only personal possession I give a damn about.

I check my front door, but the lock isn’t broken or scratched. The windows are shut tight too, the catches sealed from the inside. I have no idea how he got inside. He probably had one of his goons pick the lock on the door. If anyone would have a man for that, it would be him.

I get out my phone and call Cam.

‘Hey,’ he says.

‘Hey. You guys go to dinner without me. There’s something else I need to do.’

‘Um, all right. Is everything okay?’

‘No.’

‘Is it the case?’

‘No.’

‘Tabby?’

‘No.’

‘Ah. Then are you sure you want to piss him off when you’re already on probation?’

‘If he didn’t want me to piss him off, then he shouldn’t have stolen my leather jacket.’

‘He stole your jacket?’ There’s a pause on the other end of the line. ‘Well, I guess you did steal his pen first.’

I wish I’d never told him about the damn pen.

‘Cam, this is not the time for reasonableness. Whose side are you on, anyway?’

‘Fine.’ He sighs. ‘I’ll bring you back some takeaway.’

‘You are a prince among men.’

‘I know.’

We say our goodbyes and twenty minutes later I’m hammering on the door to Drake’s mansion. One of his goons opens it and peeks out, a tall woman with mid-brown skin and muscles bigger than Naia’s. I’ve seen her here a couple of times before. From the way her jaw clenches, I’m pretty sure she remembers me, too.

‘Yes?’ she says.

‘Where is he?’

‘It’s not Wednesday. You don’t have an appointment.’

‘I don’t need an appointment. The bastard stole from me. Where is he?’

‘Otherwise engaged.’

‘Doing what?’

‘Me, actually.’ The voice comes from behind the goon. She swings the door wide open to reveal Carlotta Arden walking down the corridor towards us, on her way out. She’s wearing a deceptively casual outfit, but I can see the tailoring in her trousers, and her shirt is definitely silk. I can smell the sex on her when she’s still metres away from the door, along with the inimitable spice of Killian Drake’s scent.

It’s not his scent mark, though. It’s too weak for that. This is nothing more than transference, and it’ll be gone within the hour.

‘Jacquéline,’ she says as she exits the building. ‘How lovely to see you. You should join us next time.’

My mouth drops open and it takes me a few seconds to pull myself together, by which time she’s standing right in front of me, smiling to herself as she waits for my response.
